Cal Poly BRAE 213 Professor Hazelwood April 9, 2008 Rehabilitation Devices The discipline of mechanical engineering is defined as “the branch of engineering that deals with the design and construction and operation of machinery” (Word Net). Typically when one considers majoring in mechanical engineering, one does not foresee a profession in the field of biology. Recently, many of the engineering disciplines are discovering a newfound application of their skills to the field of biology. The product of this melding of disciplines is known as bioengineering. Bioengineers, with an emphasis in mechanical engineering, have found themselves designing countless machines which promote individual and societal well being. One rather important subset of these bioengineered machines is rehabilitation devices. Many individuals, at one point or another in their life, find themselves stricken with a musculoskeletal malady. In the past individuals unfortunately had limited access to worthwhile rehabilitation devices. Recently however, cooperation between the fields of mechanical
