Engl 102 9-20-05 Richard Cory as Christ to a Town of Misled People The poem Richard Cory is about a man and town of naïve people. They see him for all his physical and visible qualities, admiring Richard and wishing to be like him in search of these tangible attributes. Richard becomes Christ to the people of the town; he has a higher knowledge of what is needed to live fully and knows the people need to look up to more than him. He wants them to find God. Richard offers his death to show the people that he and his characteristics are temporary and faith is eternal. In this he shows the townspeople they should not waste their lives in search or happiness, but to find it in what they already have. We people on the pavement looked at him: He was a gentleman from sole to crown, Clean favored, and imperially slim. And he was always quietly arrayed, Richards immediate presence demands the peoples attention without him saying a word. This is the the peoples description of Richard, he goes to their town as an outsider and they seem to have an instant respect of him. Much like people would be to Jesus, it seems like a quiet observance as though they are in awe of him. Arrayed means splendid attire, adding to his presence. The people of the town see him as a kind man, being slim could imply that he is a moderate man, not overeating. These people are looking at him and describing Richard in such royal detail. He is a splendid man and had yet to even do anything. And he was always human when he talked; But still he fluttered pulses when he said, "Good-morning," and he glittered when he walked.
