Purdue University- EAS 104 Spring 2008 OCEANOGRAPHY Textbook: Oceanography: An Invitation to Marine Science, 6 th ed., by Tom Garrison Professor: Dr. Brenda Beitler Bowen Email: [email protected] Office: CIVL 3233 Office hours: M & W 1:30-3 Class meeting time: M-W-F 12:30-1:20 Class meeting location: ARMS 1010 TA: Kelly Ross Email: [email protected] Office: CIVL 4175 Office hours: M 1:30 - 3:30, T 3-5, F 9-11 • Oceanography is an interdisciplinary science that concerns all aspects of the oceans - including origins, geology, climate, currents, chemistry, biology, ecology, coastal processes, and human interaction with the sea. • Grades will be based on (1000 pts total): .1 Exams (#1 = 150 pts, #2 = 200 pts, #3 = 250 pts) .2 Weekly quizzes (every Friday, 15 pts each, total = 150 pts) .3 Homework (4 @ 25 pts each = 100 pts) .4 Group project (150 pts) Grades will be posted on Blackboard Page: login at www.itap.purdue.edu/tlt/blackboard Cheating or plagiarism will NOT be tolerated and will be reported to the Dean of Students. No electronic devices of any kind (mp3 players, cell phones, calculators, etc.) may be used during quizzes or exams . Please contact me ASAP regarding any needs for auxiliary aids/services (alternative methods of meeting course requirement, special test taking needs, etc.). WEEKLY QUIZ:  A short quiz (~3 questions) will be given at the end of class every Friday based on material covered in lectures that week. Quizzes CANNOT BE MADE UP if missed, but can taken early if needed (you can miss 2 with no penalty- or if you miss none, you can end up with up to 30 pts extra!). Questions on the Exams will draw directly from questions on the quizzes. HOMEWORK:  •  Homework is due 4 times during the semester (1/30, 2/20, 3/26 & 4/16). You are required to turn in one HW assignment at each of the due dates. Late homework will NOT BE ACCEPTED. If you must miss class the day HW is due, turn it in early. Two will be “current news items” and two will be “suggested quiz / exam questions”. You decide what to turn in on required HW due dates (note: you can work on these all ASAP!).
