Gender role socialization is the expectations regarding the proper behavior, attitudes and activities of males and females. These roles vary across time and societies around the world. Socialization begins at birth with clothing in either blue or pink colors, names, and toys. Girls are given Barbie’s, dolls, play kitchens, and other domestic toys. Boys are given trucks and action figures, which starts to reinforce the notion that they have to be masculine and tough. Girls and boys are gendered into sports as well, with boys playing football, hockey and baseball, and they are expected to excel at sports. Girls do dance and gymnastics and are not necessarily expected to be athletic. In adult life, women are expected to be thin, beautiful, domestic, take care of children, cook and clean. They should be virginal, pure, submissive to men and others, and are expected to be emotional, helpless, frail, passive and to want to be mothers. Gender roles for men are for them to be the breadwinner, tough, detached emotionally, having mechanical acumen, into sports, good sense of direction, aggressive and self-reliant. Sociologists argue that gender roles are socially constructed because the way men and women are expected to behave changes
