Expanding the Concept of Beauty Growing up in a media obsessed society makes it virtually impossible to escape the relentless reminders of the concept of beauty. Media shows, more often than not, show women who are less than average in size. For many, an unrealistic image of attractiveness is portrayed through these models. As a result, many women feel they must compete with these advertisements to be considered beautiful. Beauty propaganda is what causes a distorted body image in women of all ages. Turn Beauty Inside Out is an organization that wants to celebrate inner beauty. Created by a group of girls ages 8-16, their main goal is to promote healthy body images. TBIO works to publicly educate girls and boys through public service announcements, community events, and direct interaction between girls and media industry professionals. It is a grassroots organization that applauds positive media images and denounces unhealthy messages in the media. I chose this organization because the media is such an important force, with a huge impact on all aspects of people's lives. The media creates the standards to which we have to measure up to. If a moment is spent flipping through the television channels, the programs show glamorized, non-realistic, slender women. These thin actresses are blissful, stress-free women,
