Kelly Mahoney The Things They Carried English 132 In the chapter Ghost Soliders , Tim plots to get revenge on Jorgenson by scaring him. When Tim got shot, Jorgenson, the medic, didn’t properly treat Tim and allowed him to go into shock. Tim was angry because Bobby “bungled the patch job” (190), forcing Tim to spend a month on his stomach. When the gangrene was cleared up, all Tim could think about was how to get back at him. He says, “getting shot should be an experience from which you can draw some small pride…All I know is, you shouldn’t feel embarrassed. Humiliation shouldn’t be part of it” (191). In the war, soldiers are fighting with courage and are expected to be strong and brave. Getting shot in the rear and then having the nurses make diaper-rash jokes made Tim “hate Bobby Jorgenson the way some guys hated the VC, gut hate, the kind of hate that stays with you in your dreams” (191). Not only did Tim get wounded literally, but his pride was hurt as well. Because Tim got shot and couldn’t handle the bush combat as efficiently as
