CM1131 Name: ________ Date: 14-Feb-07 Lab Group: 1B LAB REPORT E XPERIMENT 4 KINETICS OF DIMERIZATION OF CYCLOPENTADIENONE DERIVATIVE A IM To study the kinetics of the dimerization of 2,5-dimethyl-3,4- diphenylcyclopentadienone and hence determine its rate equation. I NTRODUCTION 2,5-dimethyl-3,4-diphenylcyclopentadienone is a colored organic ketone with a conjugated diene system. It dimerizes by the Diels-Alder cycloaddition reaction, losing its diene system and hence becoming colorless. Fig 1: Mechanism for dimerization of 2,5-dimethyl-3,4-diphenylcyclopentadienone The monomer solution is obtained by heating on a steam bath, and then cooling to room temperature. The monomer dimerizes upon cooling, turning from colored to colorless. This change can be measured by change in absorptivity using a UV spectrophotometer, and a decrease in absorptivity will be directly proportional to the decrease in monomer concentration by the Lambert-Beer Law: 1
