Culture - Things that constitute peoples way of life (language symbols behaviors material objects) o Nacirema – charm box, boar bristled tooth brush - Material culture – artifacts of a society - Nonmaterial culture – knowledge, beliefs, norms, values, symbols, shared by members of a society and that distinguish it from others Material culture: - Artifacts of a society which represent adaptations to physical and social aspects of an environment, ex: food, science, clothes - Both reflects and shapes nonmaterial culture - James Loewen’s “lies across America”, a study of monuments as material culture o Distinguishes between past things that happened and history, what we say about them. - Every way of seeing is also a way of not seeing - Nathan Forrest Statue, Memphis o Confederate cavalry leader o More statues in and out of Tennessee than any person is honored by o Most erected at the height of slavery o Symbol of white supremacy, first Nat’l leader of KKK, slave trader before the war, lead massacres of black soldiers during the war o Constructed at a time when whites had control of power and land Might be telling a particular story of a person Apparent how norms shaped their culture Non material culture: - knowledge, customs, beliefs, values, morals, symbols, that are shared by members of a society and that distinguish the society from others Material culture pertains to the various material and physical objects that people use in their daily lives; whereas non-material culture refers to intangibles such as values, norms, beliefs, and customs.
