The Political Development of Latin America and Sub-Sahara Africa Sub-Sahara Africa After independence (1950s, 60s) Extreme degree of territorial fragmentation o big land size, but spread out - - small populations Initial democratic systems collapse after military coups Democracy fails for ethnic reasons o Coup officers are usually from one ethnic group Tremendous period of economic stagnation / contraction after a period of prosperity o In 1970s o Affected by oil crisis, cheap credit, petrodollars (oil wealthy loans) Colonized by industrial nations looking for raw materials Latin America Different from Africa - - gained independence at the time Africa was being colonized o Wanted to expand empire / dynasty o Didn’t actively develop it except mining o Created local land owning class This class’s interests were different so it rose up against colonization - - earlier independence Countries with constitutional rule, suffrage extended to most of population Then suffer major reversal:
