King Carlos IV - reign 1788 - 1808 Spanish state bankrupt during the 1700s due to misrule & costly wars, which lead to higher taxes French Revolution (1789 -1799) Napoleonic Wars (1799 -1815) Spanish-American independence began in 1808, when the Spanish king was imprisoned by Napoleon King Louis XVI - King of the French from 1789 - 1791 & married Marie Antoinette on 16th of May 1770. He was 19 when he succeeded to the throne after his Grandfather Louis XV in 1774. After Louis XVI was crowned, the economy spiraled downward, crops failed, the price of bread and other food soared. The mob forced Louis to move to Paris from Versailles. Louis & his family was basically imprisoned in Paris but attempted escape in 1791 but was captured and returned to Paris. In 1792, the newly elected National Convention declared France a republic and brought Louis to trial for crimes against the people. Queen Marie Antoinette - was an Austrian princess, married King Louis XVI at age 14 & took seven years to consummate their marriage. Marie became very unpopular and was blamed for the corruption of the French court. She lavished money on court favorites and paid no attention to France's financial crisis.
