Colonization:1.Christopher ColumbusEurope lost access to the Silk Road b/c Ottoman took control of it and blocked the road. Columbushad to find a new route to the Asian market. He stumbled upon America which he thought was India.Europe suffering from Push-Pull Factors (factors that pull you into another country): Over-population,lack of natural resources, religious persecution, and poverty which ends up in war.Columbus pays debt by enslaving Indians and selling them to the market.2.Spanish conquest: 1518 Hernando Cortes (600 crew): Aztecs; Mexico – Montezuma (Aztec Emperor)Hernando Cortes arrives South and sees Aztecs in Mexico (Lots of gold and silver). Small pox wastransmitted to the Aztecs which allowed him to take over the city.3.1538 Francisco Pizzaro: Incas in PeruPizzaro lands in Peru which had lots of silver. South America yield 10x more gold/silver than the entireworld for 300 years. 4.1598 Don Juan de Onate (500 people) - FloridaHe wanted to find land of his own. He got to Florida and encounters Pueblos Indian w/ Chief Pope.He arrives and built a fort & distributes the land to colonists. Implemented the encomienda system: system of taxation; Native Americans have to give 2/3 of theircrops to colonists for living there, Indians were restricted from doing their culture and were convertedto Christians.Eventually, they were kicked out by the Indians. In 1696, Spanish returns again and negotiates landwith Indian and attempts to convert them. (Improvement from when they first came, aren’t asforceful now). 5.Interaction, Oppression, and GenocideLeads to oppression b/c needed forced labor to produce crops and mine for gold/silver, etc. Alsogenocide b/c land was needed and Indians were occupying the landReasons why colonies are established: 1. Asset for gold/silver and 2. Agriculture. Indians were killed by disease and Spanish says it’s due to religion. After the arrival of Spanish, 95% ofIndians died.6.Africa and America – Capturing of Indians lead to African slavery since slaves were needed to do work. 7.English Colonization-Push-Pull Factors (war, poverty, religious oppressions, rigid class system, little natural resource).-King Philip II War 1588 – Spain v. Britain: Spain won and takes N.C.-1585 Sir Walter Raleigh (NC)Sir Walter Raleigh in search of America and lands in NC. Encounters Indian kids that were gathering berries and attacks them. So of course, Indianswould attack back.He tells the Queen that NC is worth taking. -Jamestown VA 1607 (104 ppl, all men) First colonization in USA by English.Came to look for gold/silver but couldn’t find any. Winter came – led to diseases and starvation since they didn’t build any settlements & didn’tknow how to plant crops, all of the supplies that they took with them were all gone.
