Advanced English 1 – Fall 2016 Ms. Granberry – Room 2203 LAP 1:Life of Piand the Art of Survival Rationale: Yann Martel’sLife of Pichronicles the trials and tribulations of a young Indian boy named Pi Patel who struggles to survive after his ship sinks in the Pacific Ocean “midway to Midway” (101).Drawing upon his imaginative energies, ecumenical religious spirit, problem- solving acumen, and inner fortitude, Pi defies the odds to stave off death and to discover meaning in his suffering. This formative experience shapes the rest of Pi’s life. Like Pi Patel, you have embarked on an arduous adventure.At St. Thomas, your journey may often proceed on an ordered path full of landmarks and meaning, while at other intervals you may empathize with Pi’s sense of vertigo as you wander at the whim of currents beyond your control.You may experience all manner of wonders and dangers analogous to those with which Pi wrestles. During this school year, you will have the opportunity to discover faith and truth out of both your bliss and your pain. And – most importantly - here at St. Thomas, you will begin to create and to craft the beautiful story of your life - lived fully and lived well. Objectives: By the end of this LAP, you will * improve your study habits and enhance your ability to be successful in class by reviewing strategies for reading textbooks and literary works; * develop and utilize critical thinking strategies to respond toLife of Pithrough class discussion and through writing about the novel; *demonstrate your understanding ofLife of Piby participating in a seminar * improve your verbal skills by practicing the formulation of accurate, thoughtful, and thorough comments and by practicing the expression of those comments in a charming and convincing manner *review basic grammatical concepts of sentence structure and punctuation *consistently demonstrate understanding and application of MLA formatting rules
