HUM 1020 MDC Wolfson Spring 2016Prof. Dr. Julio VarelaDate Assignment is due: 04/21/16Frank Gehry- ArchitectI.Biography and background of the artistA.Frank Owen Goldberg – Born February 28, 1929 in Toronto Canada. He is an architect part of the Deconstructive movement in architecture. Today, he is known as Frank Gehry, a Canadian American living in Los Angeles, California where he runs his own architecture firm called Gehry Partners. B.As a Jewish child in Toronto, Gehry was bullied by the Christian children and continued to be bullied until he was a teenager. His harsh memories of the anti-Semitism he faced growing up and his very persistent wife pushed him to change his name from Frank Owen Goldberg to Frank Owen Gehry when moved from Toronto to California in 1947. C.When Gehry was young, he was heavily influenced by his mother and grandmother to be the man he is today. His mother took him to classical music concerts and museums and surrounded him in all the art she could find. His love for art and music is a constant source of inspiration in his architecture.D.His grandmother planted the seed to his becoming an architect. When he was in California going to college (Los Angeles City College), he tried to be a radio announcer and a chemical engineer but he was not very good at them. Then he thought about the times where he and his grandmother would sit on the floor creating little cities out of scraps of wood. He thought about his love for art and music and he enrolled in some architecture classes. He started by taking a class in Perspective. He failed miserably. A stubborn, upset dedication swelled in him to the point where he went back and took thesame class again, and passed it with an A. This fueled his passion for architecture and convinced him to continue his studies in architecture. He graduated with honors with a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Southern California in 1954.E.After graduating, Gehry went into the military, the United States Army, where he mostly designed furniture for the enlisted soldiers. When he left the military, he moved to Massachusetts with his wife and two daughters to pursue a Master’s in city planning from Harvard. He dropped out of Harvard because he felt discouraged in the way they did not take into account a humanistic approach when teaching architecture and city planning.F.He returned to California, divorced his wife and began his own design firm in 1962. After much hard work and many difficult decisions, the firm grew and became Frank Gehry
and Associates in 1967. The firm finally became Gehry Partners in 2001 which is what it is called today. G.It was very hard for him in the beginning with his company because he was a rookie architect and did not have construction knowledge so many of his first buildings had design flaws and leaks.
