Pollen analysis has aided in solving many crimes throughout the years and the number of cases that have successfully used pollen asevidence increases. With almost half-a-million kinds of spores and pollen, it can take a lotof experience to tell one pollen or spore from another. However, a thorough understanding of palynology, including knowledge of the production, dispersal patterns, preservation potential, and identification of pollen and spores is essential to solving manytypes of crimes ranging from forgery to terrorism. Let’s suppose we have a crime scene that looks like this: Entering the crime scene I, the (hypothetical) forensic investigator, see the body of a woman being fished out of a fresh water ditch. She looks as though she is 25 -35 years old and in a state of decomposition. Upon further inspection of the area, I notice that the ditch derives from a
