W.E.B. DuBois Niagara Movement; founder of the NAACP. •He believed that African Americans should strive for full rights immediately. He helped found the Niagara Movement in 1905 to fight for equal rights. He also helped found the NAACP. USS Maine Ship that explodes off the coast of Cuba in Havana harbor and helps contribute to the start of the Spanish-American War. "Start" of the Span-Amer war; exploded off the coast of cuba and it was blamed on spanish torpedoes; heightened by yellow journalists. •The purpose was to get the Americans, who were plantation owners, out of Cuba, who were dealing with Spain and trashing the US plantations. •The ship blows up and America thinks that Spain did it, but there was really a fault in the ships. Results of Spanish American War War fought between the US and Spain in Cuba and the Philippines. It lasted less than 3 months and resulted in Cuba's independence as well as the US annexing Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines. Teller Amendment • This Amendment was drafter by Henry M. Teller which declared that the US had no desire for control in Cuba and pledged the US would leave the island alone. •The passage of the Teller Amendment resulted in Spain declaring war upon the US, followed by the US declaring war upon Spain. The amendment demanded Spain withdraw from Cuba and granted the President the authority to use force to achieve Cuban independence from Spain. Importantly, it stated that the US would not would occupy, annex or permanently control Cuba, thus easing concerns within the US and Cuba that annexation was an objective of the US government. The Teller Amendment was enacted five days before the Spanish-American War, on April 20, 1898.
