Rashid Al-Naemi Professor Reznak English 101-022 10/10/2007 Servants of the Map For some, travelling means going to a different state for the weekend or spending the weekend holiday somewhere other than your regular home. For others, travelling is that time in their lives where they leave everything they knew behind and strive to survive in a different setting. Max Vigne, the protagonist in the story that is named after the book, is a surveyor who leaves Britain to go to the Himalayas in hope that he will be able to uncover some secrets and unearth answers to mysteries that no one has been able to solve. Max – unlike the rest of the people on the journey – was not fitting in from both a mental and physical perspective. The following quote from Andrea Barrett’s Servants of the Map provides evidence that Max was harassed for his physical irregularities when compared to the rest of the crew. “They have all grown beards, shaving is impossible; only Max’s is blonde and sparse. He gets teased for this and sometimes, more cruelly, for the golden curls around his genitals.” (2002) Not only does the ‘teasing’ emotionally scar him, it also hinders his progress when he is working on
