At 400K, the following reaction is allowed to reach equilibrium: 2 NOCl 2NO + Cl 2 . a) Write the equilibrium constant expression b) Equilibrium concentrations are found to be [NOCl] = 0.088M, [NO] = 0.012M [Cl 2 ] = 0.006M. Find the value of K c c) Does equilibrium favor reactants or products? K is less than 1, so it favors reactants d) All reactants and products are gases. Find Kp using T = 400K and R = 0.0821 L atm mol -1 K -1 . e) The reaction is endothermic; will Kc increase, decrease, or stay the same at a higher temperature? Le Chatelier tells us that increasing the temperature of an endothermic reaction in equilibrium will shift the equilibrium to the right (more products). Since the stress (increasing the temp.) does not directly change any concentrations, the shift must be due to an increase in the value of K. We’ll revisit this in chapter 16. f)
