Scott Choe 10/3/07 English165 How the White House worked… Zachary Colle’s article describes a crooked situation in which the federal government appears to be on a mission to combat California’s continued efforts to improve the environment. In order to reduce overall greenhouse gas emissions, our state attempted to impose “first-in-the-nation limits on greenhouse gases,” undercutting the federal government’s current standards (for the better). However, recent emails and evidence surfaced displaying a quiet White House drive to combat California’s goal. President Bush’s transportation secretary, Mary Peters, “directed a lobbying campaign to urge governors and two dozen House members to block California…” The White House argues that it did nothing illegal, and that it was simply protecting its federal standards and the Michigan auto industry in lobbying against California.
