Results and Discussion: An experiment was performed by scaling down a given procedure of recycling aluminum chemically to a theoretical yield of 23 grams of alum. The overall reaction of this experiment is: 2Al(s) + 2 KOH(aq) + 4 H 2 SO 4 (aq) + 22 H 2 O(l) 2 KAl(SO 4 ) 2 *12H 2 O(s) + 3 H 2 (g) In order to determine how much aluminum was to be used for the experiment, the given theoretical yield of 23g of alum was converted to moles, since alum and aluminum have a 1:1 ratio. The theoretical mass of the aluminum that was supposed to be used is: 1.31 g The actual mass of aluminum used: 1.311g . 1.311g of aluminum was used to in an aqueous solution of potassium hydroxide (KOH), which is shown by the reaction below: 2Al(s) + 2 KOH(aq)+ 6H 2 O(l) 2Al(OH) 4 - (aq) + 3H 2 (g) The product of the reaction above, is Al(OH) 4 - , this was used to the next reaction: Al(OH) 4 - (aq) + H + (aq) Al(OH) 3 (s) + H 2 O(l) Al(OH) 3 (s) was turned into ions by adding sulfuric acid shown by the equation below: Al(OH) 3 (s) + 3H + (aq) Al 3+ (aq) + 3H 2 O(l)
