nitrate salt using a reaction between sulfamic acid and nitrate salt, along with the application of the ideal gas law and stoichiometry. The reaction that was utilized in this reaction was: MNO 2 (aq) + HSO 3 NH 2 (aq) MHSO 4 (aq) + H 2 O(l) + N 2 (g) Where M + is an unknown alkali cation, sample# 4233 . The mass of the unknown salt was determined by measuring the weight of the vial with the salt in it and when it was empty: 17.494g-16.515g= 0.979g of unknown salt The mass of the water displaced from the experiment was measured in a similar fashion, the mass of an empty, dry beaker was measured and the mass of the beaker with the displaced water is measured. The mass of the water displaced was: 467.3g-136.125g= 331.175g of displaced water However, the for the ideal gas law, the volume is required. The volume of the water displaced is calculated by using its known volume: D=M or V= M V D Volume of water displaced: 331.175g = 331.175ml 1 gml -1
