Reader Response 2: Porphyria’s Lover Robert Browning, in his poetic piece, “ Porphyria’s lover ,” the reader is challenged to identify its complex and dynamic meaning. Upon first reading, “ Porphyria’s Lover ” may appear to be somewhat confusing, making little sense or reasoning as to why any of the events that have occurred in the poem have happened. However, breaking the poem apart and identifying specific pieces will allow the reader to better understand the poem’s true meaning, or address circuit. With that being said, in order to properly discern an address circuit, the reader must be willing to look specifically at multiple part of the poetic piece. For Example, in “ Porphyria’s Lover ,” by Robert Browning, the address circuit is distinguished by identifying the poem’s speaker, audience and message addressed to them, as well as its overall meaning. Who is speaking in a poetic piece, or any writing is an important piece of information to consider as it can drastically change the meaning or significance of a piece. Evaluating “ Porphyria’s lover ,” the speaker is quickly identified as being Porphyria’s unnamed lover. However, there is more to him than first meets the eye when one initially reads the poem. He is an unreliable, unrealistic, and deranged narrator due to the fact that the information that he provides the reader is not realistic in what would actually be happening and due to his actions. For example, in the poem, Porphyria’s lover strangles and kills her without her feeling any pain or showing sign of struggle. Then her dead body appears to be lively and beautiful once again, smiling with bright eyes and rosy cheeks as he sits with her for all of the night (Browning).

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
