Evolutionary Influences Sexual Selection Evolutionary Psychology- Explaining human behavior as a function of evolved characteristic necessary for survival. Sexual Selection- The evolution of characteristics due to reproductive benefits 2 types of characteristics o Those that allow for successful competition for mates o Those that are seen as desirable to potential mates Attracting/ Selecting a Mate- Humans Displays of financial security may indicate: o Ability to protect and provide for partner o Protect and provide for future children Mate Retention Once we’ve found a partner, we must maintain that relationship. o Continue to receive resources o Continue to reproduce Two Major Types of Jealousy Vigilance o Excessive checking in, texting, calling, checking social media, etc. Violence o Actual or threats of violence against a potential competitor Cost of infidelity for Both Sexes Women o Loss of resources
