Week 4: Social Influences Social Learning Theory Humans learn from their environment We learn behavior in 2 ways o Modeling (Observational Learning) – Learning through the imitation of behavior we observe other or models doing Models - Anyone or anything that provides observable examples of actions, attitudes, or emotional responses. During early ages, children may try to model anyone or anything, but begin to adjust their behavior bases off of consequences. Conditions/ preferences for Models Someone we have a positive relationship with Generally good or positive in nature Same-sex and acts in gender congruent ways A person with power o Reinforcement - Any stimulus that increase a behavior It does not matter if the stimulus is given or taken away. Punishment - Any stimulus that decreases a behavior It does not matter if the stimulus is given or taken away. Gender Role Socialization The environment can provide reinforcement and models that shape an individual’s behavior to
