Silk 1. What are 4 qualities of silk that make it such a useful and desirable fabric? Softness- It is a smooth fiber Sheen- Triangular fiber Strength- Raw silk fiber is the strongest textile fiber Insulating properties- the tight eave of silk traps air Absorbent- Able to absorb dyes very well. 2. According to legend, what did the Empress His Ling Shi so (who lived 5000 years ago) contribute to the discovery of silk and its application to using it to make fabric? He realized that the cocoons were made of long fibers Introduced the basic process in silkworm cultivation and silk fabric production to harvest the fibers and reel up the silk from silkworms. 3. What are three ways that the silkworm + moth have changed during the process of domestication? How have these changes improved silk or silk production? Silkworms and moths began to change due to artificial selection form humans o Larger moths were selected for more silk o Flightless females were used because materials were saved in not making the flight muscle to allow for larger bodies and more silk.
