Lecture 13: Friends and Bullying Friendship Trends throughout Childhood We tend towards sam sex peers as friends when we are young o Girls- Tend to play in small groups Collaborative discourse o Boys tend to play in large groups Rough and tumble Male –female (cross –sex) friendships become more typical during middle school age. Same-Sex Friendships Quantity Who has more friends? o Men appear to have large social networks than women (However, they really don’t) Social networks- people you maintain friendships with In terms of total friends, men and women are roughly equal Men tend to include friends and non-friends in their network. Most male friendships are instrumental o Place more emphasis on sharing activities with friends Focus of interaction- Doing Most female friendships are emotional o Places more emphasis on sharing a close connection with friends Focus of interaction- Discussion Self- Disclosure
