Nicholas Munoz Middle Eastern Humanities Kyle Jones Chapter 11 Questions 1- Compare the roles of calligraphy in Islamic and Western art. Within Islamic artwork, calligraphy is seen to be an incredibly common and essential part to many pieces. For instance, verses of the Quran are often used in many forms of art in Islamic culture in the form of calligraphy. These verses and use of calligraphy is seen in a wide variety of things in the world, such as in jewelry, pottery, paintings, and in buildings including mosques. However, the use of calligraphy is also seen being used in the Western world, but in slightly different ways. Take for instance the fact that calligraphy for the most part was used in a variety of early Greek and Latin writing systems. In fact, the first written form of Latin was dependent entirely upon calligraphy, but it was never quite used in artwork the way in which it is being used in the Islamic world.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
