Nicholas Munoz Middle Eastern Humanities Kyle Jones Chapter 9 and 10 Questions Chapter 9 Questions 1- Stated various times throughout the Quran and under Islam, women were given many rights and privileges during and after the time of the prophet. Before Islam, the social and legal situation was different as they were not treated in the same way because in many cases women had virtually no rights. However, under Islamic law women were offered a plethora of new rights and were considered equal to men under god. These rights brought change to things for women such as marriage, inheritance and divorce. Other changes brought by Islam which was beneficial for women was the inclusion of recognizing women as humans equal to men. With this in mind, new social systems were put in place offering a variety of new things to women such as social security for both her and her children. 2- Throughout nearly all of the Prophet Muhammad’s life and religious career, women played a tremendous role. This is likely due in part because of the fact that he was constantly surrounded by women throughout his life. His first wife in particular, was an enormous influence and sour of encouragement to Muhammad as she was the first person to convert to Islam and proved herself to be a devoted wife to both her husband and her religion, sacrificing nearly anything for the two. Muhammad viewed women with a great deal of respect. His other wives as well as his several daughters also had a significant impact on his life and decision with Islam. He wanted to make sure that women are protected and safe and equal in the world to men, and this belief and legacy is carried on through his children, Islam and Quran.
