Poultry Production Poultry Production Applies to chickens, turkeys, geese, ducks, pigeons, peafowl, and guineas. It is largely dominated by chickens and turkeys. Consumption for chicken is increasing yearly with over 50,000,000 pounds per year for boiler meat. Poultry is a term only used to describe domesticated birds Chickens farmed for meat are called Broilers o Broiler production is primarily in the southern and southeastern parts of the United Sates Turkey production occurs primarily in the corn belt and in North Carolina Chickens farmed for eggs are called Egg-Laying Hens. o Some hens can lay over 300 eggs per year. o The hen’s productivity will begin to decline after 12 months. Poultry Feeding Poultry feeding is somewhat complicated because they have rapid digestion, higher metabolic rates, faster inspection and circulation and a higher body temperature. o Considered to be omnivores o Consume grain, soybean meal and high quality by product feed
