Growth and Development Definitions Growth- Increase in body weight until mature size is attained; increase in cell size and number Development- Key Concepts Developmental patterns are constant o Prenatal Cell diversification Organ and tissue formation o Postnatal Mostly growth in organ and tissue size Prenatal (Livestock) 3 phases o Sex cells o Embryo o Fetus 3 primary germ layers o Endoderm o Mesoderm o Ectoderm Each of these cells have the ability to develop and form the whole body Poultry No physiological connection to the mother Develops much faster Each egg has a germ spot or Blastoderm Birth Postnatal muscle growth is mostly hypertrophic The body may be out of proportion at birth o Different body parts mature at different rates Skeletal System Protects vital organs Gives basic form and shape to the animal Bones act as levers and store materials (calcium)
