Lecture 8: Identity Personal and Collective (Social) Identities Personal Identity: o characteristics you’ve observed in yourself o characteristics you aspire to o what you value in yourself Collective Identities: an individual’s identification with a certain group Harmony between personal identity and collective identity and collective identity strengthens the identification with the group Ego-Identity Ego-Identity- Sense of self we develop through social interactions Erik Erikson’s 8 Stages of Psychological Development: o Trust vs Mistrust Virtue: Hope Caregiver relations; trust of world o Autonomy vs Shame/Doubt Virtue: Will Toilet training; self-consciousness o Initiative vs Guilt Virtue: Purpose Ease of choices; decision making o Industry vs Inferiority Virtue: Competence Social comparison; self-worth o Identity vs Identity Diffusion Virtue: Fidelity Pressure to conform; identity formation o Intimacy vs Isolation Virtue: Love
