Human and Animal Interrelationships Week 4 Lecture 12 Selective Dog Breeding Technology and body alteration to fit our tastes Selective breeding is one of the oldest forms of body altering in animals The use of technology offers additional ways Breeding for Perfection In the late 1800’s dogs were being bred as purebreds in order to acquire specific traits in dogs and led to the founding of the American Kennel Club and Dog shows. Pure bred dogs became popular after WW2 with GI bills making the purchase of a house with a yard very affordable Benefits and Costs Benefits of Pedigrees o Specialized skills and utility to humans o Desired traits are reliably produced Costs of Pedigrees Inbreeding Of the around 400 dog breeds today, all came from small pools of animals over the last 200 years Often with the production of purebred animals in inbreeding of animals very closely related. Discussion With selective or inbreeding of dogs in order to achieve a pedigree animal there certain costs and benefits.
