Study Guide Exam 2 Nutrition 1. What are the 6 essential Nutrients and define them. o Water - regulates body temperature, lubricant, and a solvent for the body’s solid food. o Carbohydrates - Provides energy to the animal. o Proteins- Compounds composed of amino acids, young animals require it for growth, pregnancy and milk production requires more. o Fats (lipids) - produces high amounts of energy. Triglycerides o Vitamins- Required in small amounts in the body Two types Fat soluble- regulates body functions. Water soluble- used in metabolic regulation o Minerals- Important part of the body’s enzyme system 2. How much energy can you get from the 6 essential nutrients? o 3. Where in nature can we find CHO’s o Sugars, starches, and cellulose. 4. What is the most abundant source of CHO in the world? o Cellulose 5. Animals need energy for various reasons, what are they? o Maintenance- maintaining the body o Growth o Production- (milk, eggs, wool, etc.) o Finishing- final feeding stage when animals are ready for market.
