HD-DVD versus Blu-ray1Introduction Both HD-DVD and Blu-ray formats were developed to succeed DVDs as optical discswith higher quality video and audio playback and larger capacity to store digital data, audio andvideo. In 2001 was the beginning of work on the next generation of optical disc technology and itsteadily progressed over the following years. The competition of formats started at the beginningof 2002 with announcements of new blue-laser technology by Toshiba in January and ninecompanies like Sony, Philips, Pioneer, Hitachi, LG, Panasonic, Samsung, Sharp, and ThomsonMultimedia in February. Both formats utilize a blue-laser technology superior to the red-lasertechnology that DVDs use but were not compatible with each other. Overview of the organizationsEvery organization likes to be rule maker, so does Sony. But that company suffers failurefrom standard wars, from Hi8 to VHS-C, from MD to Memory stick. And now, it's about Blu-rayvs. HD-DVD. Let's go back to 1996, Sony and Philips worked together to invent a high-densitydisc called MMCD (MultiMedia Compact Disc). On the other hand, Toshiba led to createanother type of disc called Super Density Disc (SD) had the massive majority of supporters at thetime, such as Hitachi, Matsushita (Panasonic), Mitsubishi, Pioneer, Thomson, and Time Warner.After negotiation and compromise on both sides, a new format standard was born, whichwas a DVD.
