SUMMARY: Fatigue is a form of failure that occurs in structures subjected to dynamic and fluctuating stresses (e.g., bridges, aircraft, and machine component); in this experiment we see that four different metals aluminum, copper, brass and steel, which were taken, and under fatigue conditions a load was applied and the corresponding number of load cycles was counted which was read from the machine and the corresponding time was noted by the stop watch. It was observed that under the application of a given the load the material breaks. INTRODUCTION: Fatigue is a form of failure that occurs in structures subjected to dynamic and fluctuating stresses (e.g., bridges, aircraft, and machine component. Under the circumstances it is possible for failure to occur at a stress level considerably lower than the tensile or yield strength for a static load. The term Fatigue is used because this type of failure normally occurs after a lengthy period of repeated stress or strain cycling. Fatigue is important in as much as it is the single largest cause of failure in metals; estimated to comprise approximately 90% of all metallic failures; polymers and ceramics (except for glass) are also susceptible to this type of failure. Furthermore it is a catastrophic and indigenous occurring very suddenly and without warning. THEORETICAL BACKGROUND: 1 . To demonstrate the principles of fatigue strength test. 2. PROCEDURE : MOUNTING THE SPECIMEN Relieve the load device using the hand wheel (the floating bearing must be at the height of the spindle). Insert the test bar in the floating bearing of the load Device. Insert the test bar in the collet chuck and push in as far the end stop.
