Summary and Response: Rhys Southan’s “Is art a waste of time?”Rhys Southan’s “Is art a waste of time?” debates that whether people can make the maximum improvement of the world by using art. The concepts that Southan introduces are about “Effective Altruism” (434), “replaceability” (436), “earning to give” (437), and the “utilitarianism” (438). He argues that “It is true that Effective Altruism would sometimes say thatthe thing you most enjoy isn’t the most moral thing to do” (483). To get the purpose of reducing harmness and make a better world, some people who do art things choose to abandon their favourite things. The content of “earning to give” that Southan explains is very convictive. For example, he mentions that the “lucrative programming job” and Ozzie Gooden’s story to support an argument, which is the way to get replaced difficulty. The social behaviors were divided into twoparts: career choice and donation. It is hard for people who have a career in the arts to be EAs.
