PPH122/PPD 170 Spring 2008 Quiz 2 Name______________________ Student ID__________________ 1) a) Explain why some procedures exhibit large variations in hospital admission rates and others do not (e.g. you may consider hip fracture versus lower back injury). Procedures for which there is clear evidence and agreement on the appropriate treatment protocol exhibit very little variation because all physicians will follow the same protocol. However, in many instances, there is no clear evidence on the best treatment course, several options are available, and different physicians have different opinions and may choose different treatment courses. As a result admission rates vary across communities where practice styles differ. b) Why are variations in procedure rates of policy concern? These variations are of policy concern because they indicate that at least some segments of the population do not receive optimal care. Some may either receive unnecessary care (overuse) or not receive necessary care (underuse).
