Purpose: The purpose of this experiment was to synthesize one of two cobalt complexes, A or B. Following synthesis, the wavelengths of absorbance of the synthesized complex (A in this experiment), the other cobalt complex (B), synthesized by other groups, and additional complexes C, D, and E were measured with a spectrometer. The collected data and the spectrochemical series were used to identify all five cobalt complexes. Results and Discussion: In this experiment, cobalt complex A was synthesized according to the procedure on page 54 of the Chemistry 207 Lab Manual. 5 grams (g) of cobalt salt was dissolved in 7 milliliters (mL) of H 2 O in a beaker. The solution was combined with 16 g NH 4 Cl and 16 mL of NH 4 OH. 4 mL of 30% H 2 O 2 were slowly added. The mix was placed on a steam bath until it reached 55 degrees Celsius (C), cooled, and vacuum filtered. During filtration, the complex was washed 3 times with 5 mL of H 2 O, and than 3 times with 5 mL acetone. Following 1 week, the filtered complex A was combined with 200 mL NH
