Gender affects the plot and character development throughout a novel in many more ways than the reader might initially believe. In The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-timeby Mark Haddon, the main characters’ gendersare very important to the entire plot. First, Christopher’s mother was not portrayed as being traditionally motherly. Also, Christopher’s father made some bad decisions based on how his gender was portrayed. Finally, strangers that Christopher encountered were also directly associated with traditional gender roles. All of these aforementioned ideas contribute to how gender affects the plot of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time.First, Christopher’s mother was not portrayed as a traditional motherly figure in The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time.
