Essay on Stem Cell research A controversial topic today is stem cell research. Some people know what it is, and some people don’t. In this essay, I will attempt to explain stem cell research and its implications. So, first off, what is a stem cell and where does it come from? A stem cell is a “simple” cell (as simple as God created them) that has not yet started to develop into what it would eventually become. Essentially, a stem cell is the basic (as basic as possible) version of any other cell in a body. So, these stem cells are undetermined building blocks that may or may not become some other type of cell, such as a blood or muscle cell. Stem cells can be found integrated all over a body (human or otherwise) and in 1981, a group of scientists discovered how to take these stem cells out of mouse embryos. In 1998, there was a scientific breakthrough which led to the ability to take stem cells from human embryos. A human embryo stem cell is simply called an embryonic stem cell, and is where most controversy lies. Stem cells are, by definition, unspecialized and have potential to become something else. This is what makes them so useful. Since they are unspecialized to begin with, they have a chance to become a specific specialized cell, meaning that stem cells can be grown to suit other purposes.
