Running Head: PSYCHOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVES1Reasoning using the five psychological perspectivesIntroductionA perspective is an approach that involves making certain assumption about thebehaviour of human beings. Each psychological perspective has its strength and weaknessesand brings about a unique understanding of the behaviour of humans (McLeod, 2007). Due tothis logic, it is essential that we appreciate the different psychological perspectives inpsychology. The five perspectives in psychology include neuroscience, psychodynamic,behavioural, cognitive and humanistic perspectives.Why ahypothetical twenty-year-old student called Lee might choose a career as anairline pilot based on reasoning from the five perspectives.The behaviourism perspective views people and animal’s behaviour are as a result of what wehave learned from our environment (Hummel & Huit, 2006). Lee may choose her career dueto classical conditioning; she may have learned from people that being a pilot are a goodcareer hence her choice. The Psychodynamic perspective was brought forward by Freud andsuggests that events in our childhood have a significant effect on our behaviour as adults.According to this perspective, it is clear that Lee had free will to make the choice she took tobe a pilot. Her subconscious mind made the choice and influenced by childhood events maybe like she once in a childhood admired pilots and wanted to become one. The Humanismperspective looks at the behaviour of a person through the eyes who is exhibiting thebehaviour. When looking at Lee’s decision from this perspective, we would view her decisionin her career as her desire to achieve the highest potential. She chose to be a pilot and leftother careers since it satisfied her well-being and happiness. The biological perspective isbased on the demonstration by Charles Darwin that genetics can influence the behaviour ofan individual.
