David McHugh, History Team AP US History Key Terms: 1. Massachusetts Emigrant Aid Company – planned to send 20,000 northern settlers to Kansas to make sure the state became a free state, but only ended up sending 1,200 people. 2. “border ruffians” – Missourians who flocked across the border into Kansas to ensure that Kansas became a slave state. 3. Kansas (1855) – Southerners passed a series of laws in Kansas against free-soilers (they couldn’t serve on juries or hold any office), also instituted the death penalty for aiding a fugitive slave. 4. “Sack of Lawrence” (1856) – pro-slavery Southerners burned down the Free State Hotel because of Free-state newspapers and rumors of the North holding military drills. 5. Charles Sumner – Massachusetts Senator, was “caned” by Preston Brooks of South Carolina 6. “Pottawatomie Massacre” – John Brown and a handful of followers attacked people associated with the territorial district court in retaliation for the “Sack of Lawrence” 7. James Buchanan – Democratic President elected in 1856
