Week 8 handout Megan Lewis AA CATABOLISM: *Remove the amino group from any AA and form an alpha keto acid *18 out of 20 of the amino acids (all but leucine and lysine) can form alpha keto acids that then can become OAA or pyruvate that then go on to form glucose *note that this along with CPSI occurs in the liver since ammonia is toxic to the body Step 1: Transamination *E-pyridoxal P is the “ping”. 1 st release the alpha keto acid. *E-pyridoxamine P is the “pong”. 2 nd release glutamate Step 2: Oxidative Deamination *allosterically activated by ADP *Inhibited by GTP (present in the mito) UREA cycle: “ordinarily careless crappers are also frivolous about urination”-all the steps in the Urea cycle (after CPSI) *Ammonia=bi-product of AAs breaking down into body fuel (acetyl CoA) *use up a total of 3ATPs *2Ammonias are used to form urea *1 ammonia comes from aspartate and the other from ammonia that enters via CPSI
