Handout 9 Megan Lewis OH Thursday 1-2pm 1) Acetyl Shuttle OAA + acetyl CoA in the matrix forms citrate that then diffuses into the cytosol. Then, once in the cytosol it goes through citrate lyase that then breaks it down into Acetyl CoA + OAA. Now, the acetyl CoA enters the FAB pathway. As for the OAA it becomes malate, and then pyruvate after forming NADPH. The pyruvate then diffuses into the matrix and forms OAA via pyruvate carboxylase (remember the step that replenishes TCA intermediates; also remember that it requires 1 ATP to function). Once OAA is made, the cycle is completed. Citrate lyase requires ATP to function The acetyl CoA formed in this process is the acetyl CoA that fuels FAB. Also, the 1 NADPH made per cycle supplies 1 of the 2 NADPH needed for FAB to occur Overall: 2 ATP, 1 NADH(from step 6 of glycolysis, only location NADH is made in the cytosol) and 1NADP are required for 1 complete cycle of the acetyl shuttle to occur 2) Pentose Phosphate Pathway (PPP)
