Dark Reactions / Calvin Cycle (LNC 20-14) Purpose: Things to know: 1. Rubisco is the enzyme that catalyzes the fixation stage. It is the most abundant enzyme on earth. Also called 1, 5 Bis-phosphate carboxylase. Metal catalysis is key for rubisco reaction to proceed. This reaction goes from 6 carbon to 2,3 carbon molecules. 2. Reduction step requires ATP hydrolysis to drive the redox reaction. 3. Ultimately still need light because to run the Calvin cycle, we need ATP and NADPH from the light rxns.
