Lab: Couplings
Purpose:
The purpose of this lab is to learn about the different kinds of couplings and how to identify which is
which. Also to learn and understand the coupling selections process as well as the inner workings of the
couplings. We read the lab book and calculated the torques based on the given formulas. The student
researched and used their own knowledge to answer the post lab questions. The results of the lab are
enclosed in the attached lab handouts. There are many types of joints available in industry and many
things need to be taken into account when deciding on which joint to use. Also when deciding on what the
correct horsepower should be, a service factor should always be taken into account.
Real World Applications:
There are many different applications of couplings in modern industrial applications. A vastly used
coupling is the Universal joint.
A universal joint is used to connect the driveshaft to the axle or output
shaft in the transmission. The U-Joint permits the shaft to flex and spin without binding and is the best
option because it allows for the most movement and tends to be very durable.
