Memo To: Jay From: Zach Danford Section: 906 Date: 3/9/15 Subject: Gear Trains and Speed Reducers Purpose: The purpose of this lab was to further our knowledge of gearboxes and speed reducers by doing hands on experiments by counting the rotations per minute for multiple sized gears. We ran the experiment and recorded the results to calculate the actual velocity ratio and compared that to the theoretical. Real World Applications: A tractor is an example of this. They don’t require high speeds but require a lot of torque to move large loads effectively. Also, a sports car is a good example. They often use a speed increaser to trade torque for speed.
