Blood Functions
:
Understand the following functions of Blood.
i) Transport Nutrients, Hormones, Wastes
ii) Regulates Body Temperature
iii) Provides Protection (Immune Response, Hemostasis)
Blood
Composition: write a short description of each of the following components of blood
Plasma-
Mixture of proteins, enzymes, nutrients, wastes, hormones and gases
Proteins-
Assists in clotting and transport of nutrients.
Electrolytes-
Includes (mostly): sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphate, and
bicarbonate.
Gases-
Oxygen and carbon dioxide
Water-
makes up 90% of blood plasma, helps to dissolve different substances and absorb heat
Nutrients-
Different materials (such as glucose, carbohydrates, amino acids, triglycerides, and
vitamins) collected from the digestive tract after processing of food to help give energy to the
rest of the body.
Wastes-
Includes the toxic products created by certain chemical reactions in the body. These
wastes are usually filtered out through the kidney and excreted in the urine
.
Formed Elements (cells): Briefly describe the functions for the following cells:Table 17.2 on page 644 in the textbook gives you a summary of the formed elements of the blood.
