Attention Getter If you could save your life, your child’s life, and/or someone else’s life would you do it? By enrolling in a water safety program, you can prepare yourself to do just that.II. Audience Relevance Link: Take a moment to imagine an ideal summer breaks or vacation… Is there a body of water around? A pool, maybe even an ocean? In our society, many people associate swimming with warm weather, fun, and relaxation. For some people, however, swimming is the opposite – a matter or life and death. According to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, roughly 400,000 people die from drowning annually - the third leading cause of unintentional injury death. III. Credibility For the past 6 summers, I have spent on average 50 hours a week working at an outdoor aquatic facility. For four years I was a lifeguard, and for the past two years, I have been a manager at the facility. Water safety is something I have seen the importance of first hand. As a lifeguard I taught four years of swim lessons, and myself performed 3 rescues on active drowning victims, as well as witnessed or assisted on about 80 rescues, or maybe even more. IV. PropositionIf you are eligible to become a lifeguard, you should become certified.V. Preview
Drowning is already a big problem in the world today, and lifeguards helps to alleviate that problem and save lives, not only by water rescues but also real world rescues, and water safety education.
