1 Astronomy 116 Lab 15 Viewing through the 24-inch Telescope Revised 25 August 2016 Equipment (supplied) 24-inch Telescope Red filtered flashlight Purpose A large telescope has several advantages over a smaller one. Of course, it has more magnification. In addition, it has more light gathering capability, making dim objects more visible. Also, a large telescope has better resolution, so that one can see finer detail in the objects that are being viewed. This lab is meant to give you an opportunity to look through Emory’s large 24 -inch telescope so that you can appreciate more detailed views of objects that can be seen in the night sky. Types of Objects The types of objects that may be visible in the telescope include… Planets . Large, round astronomical bodies in orbit around our sun. Comets and Asteroids. Smaller objects orbiting the sun. Asteroids consist mostly of rock and have orbits that are relatively round. Comets are icy objects with highly elliptical orbits. Both types of object, except for the very largest, have odd, non-spherical shapes due to their low mass.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
