Terzino 1 Kaitlyn Terzino February 10, 2016 AP English Language Ms. Bell Period 3 Problem within Education: Education contains a variety of problems within its vast and perplexing system, some include underequipped staff, tracking, and testing procedures, but none compare to the competitive atmosphere that surrounds the education system. Education involves Social Darwinism’s theory, “survival of the fittest”, because it tests the ability of parents, teachers and students to coincide for one common goal of success. All students in essence have the ability to be competitive, but those who thrive clearly demonstrate Social Darwinism. The common goal of education is success, but what is success? Definitions vary and some people believe it is the student who achieves the highest SAT score or who takes the most AP classes, or who has a 4.0, but others will say it is the student who is able to outlast the competition in one way or another. In order to have success whether in school, life or sports one must be competitive enough to be the best. Likewise in education, in order to have success the system is encompassed in a tightly packed atmosphere of those who want the same goals and must compete to achieve them. Ralph Waldo Emerson says it the best, “every young man is born with some determination in his nature” (Emerson 104), and at some point in life determination turns into competition.
